The other season

In July the lake is blue, the larches are green and the wind on Silvaplana arrives every afternoon at one o'clock. A week of the other season.

Monday: the funicular to Muottas Muragl for the sunset. Tuesday: the Bernina Express to Tirano, an espresso in Italy, back for dinner. Wednesday: the walk through the larches to Lej da Staz and lunch on the shore.

The Maloja wind

Around midday in summer, warm air rising from the Bregaglia valley pulls a steady wind up over the Maloja pass. By one o'clock Lake Silvaplana is covered in kites and sails. It is one of the most reliable winds in the Alps.

Thursday is for the lake: a rowing boat from the jetty below the hotel, or a swim if you are brave (the water reaches about fifteen degrees in August). Friday, rest. The spa is quiet in summer and the hot tub faces the evening sun.
